Control size of Detail View border

Post by dh29 »

System
FreeCAD v0.19 rev 19373
Windows 10 x64

Question
Is there any way of controlling the size of the border (matting ??) around a Detail View or make it transparent? The rectangular border can end up being very significant compared to the detail you are trying to highlight, such that it obscures other items e.g. the drawing template.

Not a present, but the issue has come up before.

Don't know when this will bubble up to the top of the list.

As a workaround, I often put the Detail View inside a "Clip group", and trim out the extra areas around the detail circle. First, create a new clip group with the leftmost clip area button, then select both the detail view and the newly created clip group; and finally press the "add view to a clipgroup button" (the plus-sign one). Then you can adjust how much you clip away by changing the clip group parameters.

Thanks wandererfan for confirmation that this feature doesn't exist (yet).

Also thanks to aapo for suggesting a work around. I haven't used a "Clip group" before so the detailed steps are appreciated. I'll give this a go.

You're welcome! :D There are some downsides with the clipgroup method, namely that the clipping works well for the pdf export only (not for e.g. dxf export and possibly some others), and also that you'll unfortunately lose the automatically generated "Detail" label by clipping below the Detail View; and you can't make a circular clip area. I usually end up adding an annotation to replace the lost label, but then the annotation must be updated manually, if the view is moved or renamed. Other than that the clip groups are indeed very useful for Detail Views.
