I've seen https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?t=52815, which indicates that as long as a STEP file is valid, it should work in TechDraw. The attached file used Part -> Import CAD of a STEP file of a pipe cap from McMaster Carr. Checking the part shows no errors. But if a page is inserted in TechDraw, then that part is selected to create a view from, something seems to go into an endless loop and FreeCAD stops responding.
If I'm doing something wrong, holler. If not, hope this helps track a bug.
Thanks!
PS - using PartDesign and adding a body to it didn't make any difference in my trials.

Re: TechDraw and STEP file
If I check the object with BOPCheck enabled, it shows lots of errors. Beware it may take long, I don't know how long, I let it working while going away.

Re: TechDraw and STEP file
I thought it did all the checks because all the individual BOP checks were checked. Newbie/interface mistake.
