Issue regarding ifc file in FreeCAD

Post by Gurbhej Singh »

I have created an ifc file using FreeCAD and tried to import it to the Staad Pro.

In Staad Pro it shows only nodes and lines. It does not have any cross-section properties and material information, which were assigned in FreeCAD.

Please help me to identify the cause of the issue.

How are you importing ifc to Staad Pro software?

I had converted the ifc file to ism file using software of Bantley. Then i had opened that ism file in Staad Pro.

Firstly, you are importing an ISM file into Staad, not the original IFC. Secondly, when you convert the IFC to ISM, make sure you do proper mapping of the elements and their respective parameters.

It's best to always check your IFC file in a standalone IFC viewer such as ifcPlusPlus, bimvision or solibri viewer... Then you can deduce if the problem is in the application that exported the IFC file, or in the one that imports it.

In case the IFC file doesn't contain what you want, can you attach the freecad file here so we can have a look?

I suggest to make exported ifc file (from FreeCAD) available to us (may be from DropBox or GoogleDrive), along with .fcstd file.

Also tell, what you are looking in staad-pro, which, in your opinion, you have supplied in FreCAD.

Convey us your precise problem.

IFC file works correctly when checked using Solibiri viewer.

When I imported the file in Staad Pro it does not show any cross-section properties and material information which was provided in FreeCAD. It only shows lines and nodes.

Thanks for sharing the files.
I don't know staad pro so I am not sure what it expects to find in an IFC file, but one thing I can tell you, what's in the IFC file are three structural elements (one beam and 2 columns, and each of them is made of a 2D polyline that gets extruded to form a volume, and each of them has the "Concrete" material associated. So as far as I can see the IFC file is correct.

Can you maybe produce with another software a similar IFC file that works in staad pro? So we can compare and see if it needs something that FreeCAD doesn't provide...

Sir,
Using another software (Revit), I generated a similar model and exported it to IFC file.
Then Imported that IFC in staad pro I got a good model with all cross-section properties and material information which were assigned in Revit.
