some toolbar icons missing on ubuntu freecad 0.18.1

Postby brjhaverkamp » Sat Apr 13, 2019 6:58 am

Hello all,

Great to see 0.18 packaging getting there. For a while I have worked with the daily and now moved to 0.18.1 on ubuntu 18.10.
The past couple of weeks I noticed the file icons are missing in the toolbar (the upper left most four icons). Also a bunch in the file dropdown menu are missing but apparently ubuntu doesn't make a screenshot when a menu is opened...

This has been going on for a while, butI see now that the bug persists in 0.18.1, so I thought I make a note about it here.
Is it just me, or are more of you encountering this?

OS: Ubuntu 18.10

I've never seen something like this. Graphical user interface problems may indicate something strange is going on with the configuration of FreeCAD. I would suggest you to delete the user configuration file under ~/.FreeCAD/user.cfg, and see if that fixes the problem. Save this file somewhere else if you don't want to completely lose the configuration of your toolbars and other things.

The other thing that could be the problem is the version of Qt. I'm running 18.04 and it's using Qt 5.9.5, while yours is Qt 5.11.1. Maybe something changed with the newer Qt that is affecting how it displays items in the toolbars.

This has been happening quite a few times of late. This is probably caused by the desktop icon theme being used.

I'm guessing this is the Yaru communitheme? What happens if you change your icon set to Ubuntu-mono-dark? You can do so with Gnome Tweaks, which should be installed on your system.

Hi @brjhaverkamp

Try installing Tools -> Addon manager -> IconThemes module. After restarting FreeCAD, things likely will look a bit different.

Just to add for the moment. This is on a fresh install of ubuntu 18.10 that has been running since December. I tried a few appimages for a while and then installed the latest package from ppa. But that is about the weirdest thing I did on the machine I took the screen captures from. And the same icons are also happening on my ubuntu laptop.

I will try your suggestion tonight. But I hope this can be fixed for new users, as it should work out of the box.

This was actually implemented as a feature. For FreeCAD on Linux being able to pick up icons from a desktop environment set icon theme. But indeed most people perceive this as a bug. Likely due to a rather low quality FreeCAD icon theme experience they are getting from their desktop environment set icon theme.

Indeed, I am running 18.10 also on the laptop, but that one is much older, and has accumulated a lot of rubish, so I could imagine issues there.
The desktop is brand new with a shiny Ubuntu 18.10 install.

I haven't gotten around to testing, life got in the way. Hope I have sometime this weekend.

Bert

I am using the Yaru theme on Ubuntu 18.10, and I can confirm that the toolbar icons displayed correctly when I switched to Adwaita or Ubuntu-mono-dark for instance. But installing the addon also fixed the icons with Yaru theme. Thanks! :)

Hi Triplus,

Finally, finally got some time to check. And indeed.
Tools -> Addon manager -> IconThemes module. After restarting FreeCAD, things did look a lot better!:-)

But this is a a workaround. But should I file a bug report? Or is this a known-enough issue and being worked on.
For sure a first time user does not appreciate missing icons on starting the application,
and there is only one chance to make an first impression!

Regards,

Bert
