Sorry a total noob here but I didn't catch the answer to the initial question:

What is snap and why do we need it?

A snap is a bundle of an app and its dependencies that works without modification across many different Linux distributions. Snaps are discoverable and installable from the Snap Store, an app store with an audience of millions.

Snaps are a package format that is primarily used on Ubuntu, but is usable on quite a few Linux distributions: https://snapcraft.io/docs/installing-snapd

Tightly coupled with the package format is the store: https://snapcraft.io/store, with the idea here being quite similar to the Play Store on Android or Apple's App Store.

User benefits are in essence:
- easy app discovery and easy installation
- auto-updates (see below)
- snaps run in confinement (like permissions on Android) and can only affect the host system in clearly defined and declared ways (plugs & sockets)

The developer benefits include:
- Defined platform ("base"). A snap will run on many different distributions without changes. Packaging is thus quite easy.
- Auto updates by default. Users will get the most up-to-date versions very quickly
- Channels. Providing nightly builds in channel "latest/edge" while at the same time providing releases in channel "latest/stable" makes it easy serve all kinds of users ("need latest features" vs. "need stable software")

A very similar technology exists and FreeCAD is also published as such: Flatpaks (https://flatpak.org/)

Sounds like some good things mixed with some bad things.

For example why do I get the feeling that Canonical is trying to build a fence around open software and call it an 'ecosystem'. Why is this not an open standard instead of something that only Canonical owns and controls?

For the record: Snapd (https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/), the program that installs & launches snaps, and snapcraft (https://github.com/snapcore/snapcraft/), the tool used to create snap packages, are both FOSS.

Hi, it was actually fortunate / unfortunate that 0.19 doesn't seem to work on the ppa since updating to KUbuntu 20.04 that i tried the beta snap.

The application launches but none of the text is available and i guess the font config warnings pertain to its xml missing configuration.
I get the following when starting the application from the console:

Maybe add a simple thing to the bash script to check if directory doens't exist and then do the mkdir.

I'm trying to use freecad 0.19 with Trails addon in Ubuntu 20.10.

I've installed addon manually with git clone --recursive in ~/nap/freecad/current/.FreeCAD/Mod

And I have problem.
When I'm trying to use "Import point" icon, i'm getting:
