It would be nice to get more recent than 7.5.0 but that mean I need to take Kicad out of the distro as well, which is more hassle than it's worth without some killer issues being resolved in OCCT.

You might want to give kicad-6 a try. In Gentoo, we have 6.0.4 which seems to work with newer (>=7.6) versions of OCCT.

Thanks for the suggestion but I try to minimise the number of out of distro packages for which I need to keep track of dependencies myself.

I used Gentoo for about 10y, it was great fun and I learnt a lot about Linux but I spent more time maintaining the system than I did using it. It's quite impressive that they manage to keep all the dependencies together on a rolling update basis instead of locking into periodic system updates like most other distros.

you could go with the kicad flatpak I guess, shouldn't be too much of a hassle but I don't know if that brings issues of it's own

We definitely need more power-users using the most up to date version of dependencies, just saying

Most of the dumb errors which come from dependency problems do not need power users, they need cannon fodder. Young folks with lots of time. I've already been there and given generously. Now I stand back and let others who are more motivated take the flak of new releases. 34 goes EOL I move to 35.

Now we'll see whether Fedora does anything with the bug report I filed or just let the bot come back in 12mo time and close because F35 is EOL. That is the fate of most Fedora bugs.
