Forget all I was mumbling about so far, I was talking out of my rear orifice :lol:
The solution has nothing to do with icon's appearance or customisation.
Leave icons as they are, and just modify .desktop file giving different name to each package,
with the result that as you hover over icon it displays it's name making it clear what the icon links to:

Sorry :oops: to have wasted your time, but it took me some time to realise what the solution was...
I am using Link branch and Assembly3

for something that only displays text when you hover IMO different icons are a better solution

Maybe realthunder will add the icon too snap. Not sure if you can add multiple icons like you could on windows.
Also hoovering over an icon is indeed annoying!
