Orbion - The OpenSource 3D Space Mouse

Post by M4x »

Hey everybody,

I've just came across a project called Orbion. It describes itself as a "3D Space Mouse DIY easy to build at home". It's an open source project. Some of us are using "commercial CAD-/space mouse-input devices" but I guess the majority isn't. Maybe this project is a suitable way to have a closer look at such devices.

EDIT:

And also the electronic and firmware files, at a first glance they are not in the repo, maybe in another?

They are here, under Releases

Apparently there are CAD files and STL too.

Probably some more advertised link in the README.md will be advisable.

Yes, I too have a commercial one from "the company". I have the cheap one with a wire. And I have to say that it is good. But some times FC stutters a bit and also it rotates a bit weird, but all in all I like that a lot more than using the mouse or even a trackpad.

I really like the idea of a open source 3D mouse, but the question is the quality, because the 3D Connection one has a serious mass that makes it stable.

Maybe they can use a couple of heavy washers on the bottom or a ring.

I've read something about applying some rubber at the bottom. Yes, I think it'd be a good idea to make the device kind of heavy (by putting metal.somewhere in the base or by machining a base out of metal).

I can only agree with you, the navigation gets so much easier, smoother and more fun if you're using a SpaceMouse or something like that. I've the cheapest SpaceMouse from 3DConnexion since a few years I think (mapped the keys to create new sketch and delete). I've upgraded to the Pro version just yesterday. As soon as it gets here, I've a small one for sale ;)

Nevertheless, I'd like to have a look at some builds and reviews of the Orbion.

Now that we are talking about hardware, why isn't there a list of preferred hardware? Something like professional hardware from Lenovo, Dell or HP?

If someone (or some manufacturer) wants to provide me one to try, I'd like to see if it is at all useful.

Otherwise, a $20 mouse with 3 buttons and a middle button roller, seems quite adequate.

Hm, we could use this Wiki page for something like that: 3D_input_devices
