AFAIK, there's no open source materials database like this?

nice, but as always with these corporate stuff, it's hard to see how much data is available, and under what conditions, and for how long these conditions will be maintained... By browsing those sites, I couldn't find much really usable data. Mostly they redirect to other sites and then things become complicated Certainly worth keeping an eye on it, though.

The point was that instead of Granta, there could be an open source database that does what Granta does (the same idea). Not that FreeCAD should interface with Granta.
I think it's fairly rational that a materials database ought to be open sourced, because the data is almost universal in a sense.

Yes certainly.
If such materials database would exist, it would indeed be cool to hook into it.
Maybe all it needs is a kind soul to start one

We already have a tiny open source material databease. The files are in src/Mod/Material/StandardMaterial/ and are licensed under CC-BY 3.0

This is true... One day, one could easily create a web application that retrieves and lists the info from there...PrzemoF wrote:We already have a tiny open source material databease. The files are in src/Mod/Material/StandardMaterial/ and are licensed under CC-BY 3.0

Once we have consistent data file we could create FCMat --> some_database_format script. Accessing it from a web page would be a trivial exercise...yorik wrote:This is true... One step at a time and we'll get there
