Re: FreeCAD on the web
The FreeCAD subreddit just broke 1500 subscribers: https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeCAD/
Although the forum is clearly the central hub for communication, it's worth remembering that if we meet our users where they are, it can help grow the community, and Reddit is the 21st biggest website on the planet.

Re: FreeCAD on the web
I think the exact opposite, I think its utterly depressing to see how many idiots post to "name your stupid platform" Google+ facebook Redit etc. I never ever use any of them.kkremitzki wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 12:38 am The FreeCAD subreddit just broke 1500 subscribers: https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeCAD/

we are over whelmed on our own forum, the last thing we need is a dilution of effort and knowledge. I utterly refuse to have my time wasted having to follow yet another platform/website.
If you want to discuss FreeCAD then for goodness sake go to FreeCAD! its not complex. What I think we should be doing is going to all those stupid sites, create an Official FreeCAD page then lock it and just say "If you want to discuss FreeCAD with people who actually know what they are talking about, then for goodness sake go to FreeCAD!"
The other depressing thing is if we don't have control on those other places, so when you get yet another idiot posts crap about FreeCAD you can't do anything about it. There is yet another idiot over there that has posted about there not being an Assembly WB without even realising that is what they are asking about.
I think we should aim to have our own infrastructure and keep control of our project/code etc. I know that is easy said, but who is going to do it, but its still a good direction to aim for. I am not the only one who is asking why ms bought GitHub and lived through the destruction of sourceforge with unethical owners. For that matter why has MS bought a place on the Linux foundation?

Re: FreeCAD on the web
I see lot´s of people on my Youtube channel, asking questions . I allways sent them to here, as long as it is related. But it must confess that for many people, there OWN and/or well known discussion place is the only place. I have colleagues who are on reddit and would not trust anything else..similar to people who seldom leave Youtube yor anything.
So we should be aware that avoiding other places than this forum can have a bad side effect on the project. It´s better to influence there so users come here and let this stay the central source of information.
and as a late addition.. look at the reddit FreeCAD Area.. tons of links into here...

Re: FreeCAD on the web
Sooner or later all the sites like fb, g+, yt, gh, reddit will be down or will be taken over by something more popular. Having no way of exporting the knowledge database to a new platform is like living on a volcano. It's just a matter of time and the disaster happens. Self hosted forum takes more effort, but it's the only safe option in the long run.
P.S. If we need funding to run the server I'm sure we get it easily. I'll be very happy to pay my share.

Re: FreeCAD on the web
If there are 1500 subscribers to FreeCAD on Reddit i would assume a few of them have some knowlegde about FC.

Re: FreeCAD on the web
If you look at the content of the subreddit you'll see it mostly serves as a funnel to direct people to interesting things on the forum. The way I see it, people are going to talk about FreeCAD on other popular sites whether we want them to or not, it's a matter of whether we want to have a voice in the conversation... spreading the word about FreeCAD does not constitute a dilution of effort or knowledge.
