FreeCAD needs FEM, assembly, path & robot video tutorials

Postby kalpa » Sat Jul 02, 2016 2:09 pm

Hi, I have been fiddling with FreeCAD for a couple of days.

Great and comprehensive video tutorials are from Youtube channels :
* Learn FreeCAD
* cad1919

But it lacks tutorials in
* FEM
* Assembly
* CAM

I realise these areas are still in active development but for users it would be great if someone does tutorials in these areas upto what is already implemented.

Thanks.

Mods, could you please move this topic to Open discussion, as it is not specifically a help request.

Thanks.

There is no functional Assembly workbench yet. Therefore it does not make sense creating tutorials for it at this point, and for quite some time in the future.

Do you absolutely need video tutorials?

For FEM there are two great introductory tutorials in the wiki:

to be clear that is not FreeCAD Assembly, it is a third party FreeCAD extension "Assembly2" that offers some limited Assembly type functionality but is not related to the official FreeCAD Assembly Workbench which is currently being worked on but is still some way off.

"Still some way off"... :cry:

Though I'm still able to be quite productive with FreeCAD for generating models to send to my 3D printer, not having assembly functionality is still a major shortcoming.

It makes me wonder... FreeCAD's own splash screen shows what looks a lot like a 3D printer gantry. Is it even possible to create what's shown in that splash image with the current version of FreeCAD? I suppose one could pull out one's calculator and paper and figure out exactly how to position a lot of individual solids...

It's not only possible, it was done with an earlier version.
See this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfinO3EGXeo Note the custom toolbar.
This does require user interaction but is still powerful, not as powerful to let an assembly constraints solver do it for the user, but powerful non the less.

Ooo, okay, that's a good step forward. Still no kinematics, though...alas.

Not in FreeCAD master. Search these user's posts, especially in the python scripting forum. microelly2 and JMG
