Do not feel obligated to provide support; it's free software, people should understand this. Provide support to the best of your abilities, and only if you want, but never feel obligated to it. Rather focus on your own vision for the program.
In the past I personally focused a lot on the wiki documentation precisely so that other users could find the information they needed without having to ask the same questions many times in the forum. I think you should do the same, and focus on the written documentation for Path. It takes time to create good documentation but the benefits are worth it in the long run.
I think growing the user base is definitely a net benefit; if you don't "waste" time supporting people there is no drain of resources. Just focus on improving the system for new contributors; that's essentially what I've been doing for a year now, reworking the Draft Workbench, improving the documentation in many areas, helping other users get started, helping with bug reports, etc. I feel we are close to that point when we will be able to capture more power users and developers who are willing to work on this project for a long time. Just remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint; even if there is a massive event as with Fusion360, we don't need to win any race, we just need to keep our pace.
