Why switch from SketchUp to Blender? 20 reasons.
Maybe one day we will have a video about why switch from XXX to FreeCAD. :)

That new real-time render engine that's coming with 2.8 looks awesome. Maybe that's the thing that'll convince me to finally learn Blender...

If only you didn't need to spend so much time creating a scene, lights, materials... :?

(At work we're looking into buying a KeyShot license. It's ridiculously easy and fast to create a great rendered image with it because it comes with hundreds of materials, backgrounds etc.)

The realtime rendering thing is the new rage... Everybody is using game engines, etc... I wish OCC's one would become available for linux, then we could have our own as well

Hi Yorik
I just noticed this in the third last paragraph
platform-independence achieved through OPEN CASCADE “know-how” in 3D graphics and GPU programming.
here at OCC
https://www.opencascade.com/content/ind ... -rendering

Does "platform independence" mean it will work on Linux?

and the last paragraph
In order to help the users to benefit from OPEN CASCADE photorealistic rendering technology, an authoring tool is being developed by the OPEN CASCADE team. It is coming soon and will be available for free – watch for the announcements on our site!
I wonder if "available for free" means opensource?

Is this the same thing that you are referring to?

Yes, that's the one. They even posted about it on this very forum, a year or two ago.. But then we haven't heard of it anymore, hard to know if it's still being developed...

What about your secret plan to import FreeCAD into Blender with Python3? Maybe this way FC can just steal eevee. :P

The importer is working already. I haven't looked yet at what is needed to create eevee materials, but yes, going through blender is something that will probably always work best
