Hi and welcome to the forum! I really hope that as scientist and engineer you'll be able to help use make FreeCAD better.
There is a discussion on the forum about being "intuitive", so i don't want to repeat it here, but it boils down to what you already know. I guess you tried to crack FreeCAD without watching too many tutorials? It's like trying to use Microstation when you're AutoCAD specialist - it can drive you mad (I've been there, I've done that) just because the workflow is completely different. I have to agree that FreeCAD is a bit chaotic at times, but hey, fill a bug report to help make it better!
Can we talk in details about your problems one-by-one?
1. What do you mean you can't select line and point?
2. There are many ways to skin the car, I don't believe there will ever be "one way". Post an example and the forum will tell you how to do it. Over time you'll know which way is the best.
3. Any special case where you need it?
P.S. Please edit the title of the topic...
+1
Very good answer.
Let him learn Freecad, he will correct the title from sucks to rocks.
0. Version --> big red banner! And FreeCAD an "app"? What are apps.

1) "Constraints" are a great concept, but I can't select the lines and points I need to constrain.
Check your navigtions mode.

2) There is no clear workflow to make a part.
Multiple type of parts, multiple workflows.

3) The sketcher engine desperately needs infinite construction lines
Then you do something wrong.

It is not intuitive ..... make it more dummy-proof.
For me as an engineer it is very intuitive. I can handle with FreeCAD things, that my workmates can not do with a very expenive CAD Programs (many thousand Dollars/Euros). With dummy proof things you can only do dummy things like all the "free" cloud based (cr)apps.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
...
Forget about it. This type of user has already made his mind and just wants to vent. He won't be seen again. For the rest of us there is not much to do but to go back to our lives, and continue using FreeCAD.
I have huge respect for the team that has brought Freecad to it's current level, many thanks ladies and gentlemen. It isn't perfect but it is very, very good and extremely versatile.I doubt the OP has tried many other parametric software suites of similar capability.I had a similar level of regard to his when I was faced with Pro Engineer and even after the basic course, still found it a pain. That pain has paid off in that I find similar concepts within Freecad and have a little idea of what to do next or where to look for help.

Lads, no personal trips please. The OP was venting frustration and I'm sure many FreeCAD users had a similiar experience as his at some stage. Me included.
The difference is that most people do not post with a provocative title that is certain to rile up the community. This is nothing else than troll-like.
You want to avoid topics that go sideways, I believe it's your responsibility as moderator to nip it in the bud - when you actually approve the post. You might even want to consider if such posts deserve to be approved.
Here, you or another moderator should have edited the title to replace it with something more acceptable that would still convey the OP's frustration, like "Utterly frustrated with FreeCAD's interface", or "FreeCAD woes". It is not too late to do it.

Yes, they are!
Generally it suffices to click the line to select a geometry element.

2) There is no clear workflow to make a part. Numerous workflow paths are "dead ends" - leading to bugs that require rebuilding from scratch. For example, sketch -> extrude -> array OR sketch -> array -> extrude? That is just a simple example of the difficulty I have encountered.

3) The sketcher engine desperately needs infinite construction lines and a way to specify which side I am talking about.
I would be very interested in this. However I do not quite understand what you are referring to:
1) I do not understand what you refer to infinite construction lines.
You mean lines that are infinite in length and additionally are of construction type, or you mean an infinite number of lines of the type construction?
2) I also do not know what you refer to with the side of a line.

I guess he means a kind of axis. so it has no beginnig, no end but only a direction. To accomplish this you need probably 2 points as reference or one point and a angle...
If i have time i add tomorrow a creo example for this...
I personal like these axis / infinite lines... since they are more clean than normal construction lines...
