Great! Noted!

Also: the BRL-CAD and OpenSCAD people are cooking this new github place to gather all our GSOC projects instead of the BRL-CAD wiki: Let's add ours there! https://github.com/opencax/GSoC/issues

I'm willing to co-mentor the BRL-CAD integration task.

Hi rossberg, welcome to the forum and thanks for your willingness.

Since this is your first post, could you elaborate on your (FreeCAD-) background?

I started my programmer career in the 90s as CAD developer with Nemetschek. In the early 2000s after a job change, I was in charge of utilizing BRL-CAD in another application. After BRL-CAD changed to open source, I became an "official" developer there. Because of changed job requirements my source code contributions became rare, but I still look after our students. This year would be my 11th GSoC.

I know FreeCAD a bit as a user, but have never compiled it. However, I have knowledge of CMake and Qt (commercial license since 2003) and I'm not afraid of working with source code ;) I discussed the BRL-CAD integration with Yorik at the GSoC Mentor Summit last year and I think it would be fair to support it too.

Thanks for popping in @rossberg! Great! You would be the perfect co-mentor for that BRL-CAD/FreeCAD project (For eveybody else, he wrote the BRL-CAD C++ API)

Now I need to write its description :?

Hi dear FreeCAD community,

I am Patrick and I wanted to express my interest in helping to improve FreeCAD
by trying to participate at GSOC.

Out of all the interesting projects that are available, the one with the purpose
of replacing the finite element method solver Calculix by Z88OS is especially
tempting for me. The mathematical aspect of my study subject (which I will
introduce shortly) always fascinated me and the possibility of
applying/expanding my knowledge seems very rewarding. Even though I assume that
this project most likely doesn't require a deep mathematical understanding of
finite element method, but the topic is of interest to me and I'd like to
strengthen my knowledge about it nevertheless.

For the past year I wanted to start to contribute to the OpenSource community by
picking a project and start developing and fixing bugs. I ended up not doing it,
because the projects I considered doing all seemed daunting and I never really
knew where to start. This community, along with its participation at GSOC, and
the fact that every student has their own mentor offers a guided chance of
entering the OpenSource community which I would really like to take.

A little to my background:
I graduated from HTL, a higher vocational school with a focus on technical
subjects like informatics, engineering and others. I chose to major in
informatics. After graduating, I went on to study computer engineering at the
Technical University of Vienna. Over the course of the next two semesters I plan
on finishing my studies. Since our first year at the HTL I have known @m42kus
and he is the one who introduced me to FreeCAD and GSOC and asked me to join
contribute to FreeCAD this year. My plan is to dive into the development over
the course of next month, in order to become familiar with it and to be able to
write a good and detailed project proposal.

Best regards,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Welcome aboard! In a few days we'll know if we're accepted as an org to the GSOC program, then we'll be on track! As FEM is mainly the domain of bernd, howil and mlampert, I suggest you sync your ideas with them...

To everybody else, we need to port our project ideas to https://github.com/opencax/GSoC/issues I'll write and add the two I added to the GSOC 2019 page, please help porting other issues from previous years that you think are still good ideas...
