Optical Workbench.

Post by jruiz »

I was wondering if it would be very hard to implement a couple of tools for converting:
  1. Some objects (points, line segments, arcs of curves, pieces of planes or any other surfaces) into sources of light,
  2. Surfaces into mirrors ( and
  3. Three dimensional objects into refracting "prisms.", )
As I am imaging the tools, some parameters would control:
  1. (Just for practical purposes,) The length of the (emited, reflected and eventually refracred ) rays.
  2. The reflectance of the mirrors
  3. The refraction index of "prisms"

I don't think it is easy since there are specialised software tools for that...
see for pricing here: https://www.zemax.com/pricing/opticstud ... al-license

On the other hand how cool would it be to have this in FC

I was thinking that developing the "optical workbech" I mentioned was almost straightforward, because FreeCAD already "knows" how to calculate the involved operation for getting reflection of rays on surfaces. Just the Snell law has to be programmed.

I'm hired to another company at this moment. That company does a lot with optica.
I can tell you it is a bit more than that

Most used term i hear around me is aberration(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_aberration)

see: here for series of books they use here...: https://photonics.intec.ugent.be/educat ... _handbook/ (for if link break at some point "handbook of optics")

Thanks for the links. (Btw, I am a Physics Doctor and I had seen some of this information ;) )
My point is that for simple modeled math surfaces (of mirrors and lenses), the path of each ray can be obtained easily with Freecad (or at least it is what I think).
(As workbench matures the approximations could be improved)

Cool i didn't know that... Good to have some doctors around to do some fancy stuff :D
