If we follow all the arguments against 1.0 we will never get there. ...
This is not true at all. Why do you keep repeating this? This is not true!
Time will show. I repeat this in the hope that you revisit all of your arguments such as "we could have done it three years ago", "things will change in the near future", "the documentation is not on par with the program", ...

The same arguments will be on the table in 5 years. People will have great ideas about converting data from brand new 3D interstellar touchscreens, there will be modeling techniques super easy to use by newbies and generating stable FreeCAD models in the background, OCC will have gigantic changes in the queue, there will be a new and finally standardized export format for 3D printers, and, of course, the documentation will be ways behind the program.

yorik wrote: Tue Mar 19, 2019 3:39 pm I think we should aim for 1.0. We are close to it. We should decide what are doable, medium-term goals we can achieve for it. The miraculous assembly that will unite us all is IMHO an illusion. @realthunder's work is of course by far the closest thing we have to it, but it's an extremely challenging and complex thing, with changes all over FreeCAD, that basically only him is able to handle so far. And we have extremely good feedback from A2plus too, which more and more makes me think, we have a working solution there. I wonder if we shouldn't reconsider this "1.0 == assembly" concept.
and now in 2020 the target is moving forward again... in this way FreeCAD will never reach 1.0 version number full stop.

The version 1.0 will come, but we just need more time for different features to become stable. Why is this so hard for you to understand?
please have a look at the forum during the years and you will see that @chrisb is on the right side, not you.

Let's all be cool.
I think the thread is long enough to articulate our differences. I don't think we are going to convince anyone at this point.

Is there anything we agree on?

Inkscape 1.0 was recently released after 17 years (and it forked off of another software, sodipodi in 2003, which again was forked off Gill in 1998). Some major milestones for 1.0 seems to be translations for 20 languages, HiDPI support, GTK+3 interface, native macOS, fundamental change in extensions among other things.

Not directly related to FreeCAD, but I thought it was interesting to notice. The software is about the same age. From a marketing point of view, yes, it will gain some momentary publicity. For long time users and developers, version number doesn't really matter much.

May be we could agree on 0.91 as release after 0.19. If we switch to 0.91 we still have ten versions to 1.0

Or the other way around. Who is against a version 0.91 after 0.19?

Inkscape paved the way by doing this as well.
Maybe this is the compromise?
It's not 1.0 but it's a step closer and we need to make a release since 0.18.4 is woefully behind 0.19.x + we need to include the latest workaround for SHIBOKEN_MICRO_VERSION git commit 299368b
The Toponaming in the next release: v1.0

This means that we almost definitely will indeed have 10 more years until 1.0. IIRC even vocx talked about five more years. Why not go for 0.95?

OK, I will try another way before we choose a number.
Maybe someone could setup a poll?

Is FreeCAD closer to 1.0 or 0.1?

Not necessarily, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inkscape#Release_history
