Which processor for FreeCAD i7 6 core vs. i9 8 core

Post by chrisb »

Which MacBook pro would you recommend for FreeCAD usage:
1) 2,6 GHz Intel i7 Hexa-Core
2) 2,3 GHz Intel i9 8 core

Recently upgraded to a new laptop (not a MacBook) with 4 cores (vs 2 on the last one) but a slower clock.

The extra processors are nice in general work, but don't make much difference for FC.

I would go for the higher clock speed.

That made me thinking - had you heard about any attempts to port OCCT to use CUDA or OpenCL?

AFAIK, the only GPU support in OCCT is in their Visualization component.

FreeCAD is still a rather lightweight application, when it comes to CPU/GPU requirements. Therefore just about any hardware you buy today and is desktop oriented, should do.

Yes, of course, and it will be better than my current system. But I would like to have the better, if I can get it.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I read somewhere Apple might be thinking to switching to ARM, and the future of OpenGL on Apple devices is a bit moot. From such point of view indeed it makes sense to buy more performant hardware today, as you will likely end up using it for years to come, at least as far as the FreeCAD is concerned.

You should take the 1st model to use FC, and the 2nd one to compile it.
To second @triplus, I would especially check the OpenGL support. Apple announced its deprecation quite a long time ago. ;)
