freecad.gears (aka FCGear) epic-megagrant

Post by looo »

As already announced somewhere in the forum the freecad.gears workbench (aka FCGear) is now supported by the epic-megagrant [1] project. This gives me the opportunity to work on the project (part-time) until January 2022.

The work during the megagrant-sponsorship will include several tasks like:

- improving the gears (more parameter, better documentation)
- working on issues [2]
- adding a possibility to easily assembly the gears

The work will happen within the megagrant-branch [3] and will result in a new version at the beginning of 2022. Feel free to add issues or discuss additional ideas here in the forum.

That's cool to hear!

Are you till open to minor PRs in the meantime? I was just about to prepare one exposing the calculated addendum and root circle diameters to FreeCAD as well (currently, only the pitch diameter is accessible but the others are available in pygear).

Sure, backward compatible changes can be applied to master at any time. But I think there will be at least some changes that are not backward compatible. Those will be applied only to the megagrant-branch.

Congratulations !
The gears workbench is a great asset and I've tinkered with it some months back. Just had a look at the items that will be addressed in this megagrant phase and happy to see filleting may be addressed. It's about the only thing I wanted for the project that I was working on.

Anyway, congrats again and cheers from Canada,

Fillets for spur (involute) gears are ready for testing. Have a look here: https://github.com/looooo/freecad.gears/issues/50

At the moment you need python-occt but I will try to look into adding 2d fillets to freecad directly.

This sounds great about the fillets ....I think...I don't know what Python-occt even is though - LOL. I know what Python is and have tinkered with it a bit in FreeCad so a bit of googling should sort me out.

Thanks !
