This is a nice example to show how parabolic mirrors bundle all the rays in one point.

Hi Christi,

Outstanding work!! Congratulations. Thank for do this workbench. FreeCAD is now even more complete than ever.

I hope you can evolve this amazing project!

... I have some trouble understanding the optical design of the ELT.
With parabolic shape I can't get a realistic optical path.
Up to now I always thought about a parabolic M1 mirror, but there is another text:

https://elt.eso.org/mirror/M1/#mirrors-m1-technical
The elliptic concave mirror, 39.3 metres in diameter and with a 68.7 metres radius of curvature, is composed of hundreds of off-axis aspherical segments, 1.45 metres across. The gap between the segments is 4 mm.

I made a comparision of a parabolic and an elliptic mirror with the Optics workbench. The parabolic mirror focuses parallel beams that fall perpendicular onto the mirror exactly in one point, while the elliptic mirror does not. Zoom into the design to investigate.

Played a little bit with optics:
Draft-wb snapping works for every ray. You can construct faces, lets say for
energy-loss calculation.
With curves-wb you can extract single rays for further calculations.
Fascinating stuff, congratulations!

@christi
BTW: in FEM-wb you can adjust the load vectors by selecting an edge of a body.
Maybe you can adopt this to define beam directions.

comparison to pyrate

Post by Boogieman »

I'm starting to model a simple mirror system with freecad and found pyrate and this project.

What is the connection to pyrate workbench. Why does it have the same Icon?

What are the advantages / disadvantages compared to pyrate?

I copied the icon. This is software pyracy :D
The pyrate workbench integration into FreeCAD is broken. You can still use it as a standalone application that creates its own geometrical objects and do some fancy calculations. See https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Pyrate_Workbench
The Optics Workbench can use any FreeCAD objects as mirrors, lenses or light absorbers and do some simple ray tracings through these objects.
