Ok, here are comments.
What purpose does "exact size" have? If it looks OK and works OK why does the precise number of pixels matter?
Non-metric units in FreeCAD work fairly well for the most part, but there are still gaps. At the same time the motivation for additional refinements and the necessary coding changes are likely to come from the same population of users.
(I use Imperial decimal almost exclusively.)

there is no locking in other places, so we shouldn't introduce it here. If you don't want to have something changed, don't change it. Same here.
I didn't understand that Gene would do it, it's rather you who should start coding.
You can show the column size in the status bar, then no new popup is needed.
