START wb Example Files

Post by Shalmeneser »

There are actually 9 files in START wb page :
* ArchDetail
* EngineBlock
* FemCalculixCantilever2D
* FemCalculixCantilever3D
* FemCalculixCantilever3D_newSolver
* PartDesignExample
* RobotExample
* Schenkel.stp
* draft_test_objects

Are they the best examples for 0.20 version ?
Everybody download them, but are they useful ?
What should we need ?

This post is for general discussion. For examples, please open new post.

I updated PartDesign example some days ago so at least it is modeled following stability advices.
To define if they are the best examples, you need to define which audience they are targeting.

FEM 2D and 3D new solver can be deleted. FEM 3D should be replaced by the one from FreeCAD FEM examples gui.

They are the first sight of inside Freecad.
They are examples of a workbench : "PartDesignExample.FCStd"

So, they are showing what this workbench can do :
* some useful and interesting tools
* some methods or how-to-do (good practices)

This example should be explain in a wiki tutorial.

The audience is : new users. (old ones never check these examples)

I'm not sure of that. To me they are only meant to be just simple examples of the workbench workflow, but not to demonstrate the full capacity of all workbench features. ;)

BTW: In FEM I moved to code the examples in Python instead of just adding a FreeCAD file. Compared with some unit tests this is very robust (the examples continues to work even after code changes because of the unit tests.) and helps users in scripting.

Examples are examples, of course. But could they be more useful than now ?
It will never be possible to show the full capacity, but some good tools or methods yes.

Why is there examples ? It could serve as reference sometime when explaining in the forum.
