[Feature Request] Search field for AddonManager

Post by leoheck »

So, I always wanted to have this search field on the AddonManager.

The idea is to have a text field where you can type a substring of the name of the package/macro to list only items that include this substring.

It would be good when looking for something new.

For instance, I would like to find a macro that does spring-related stuff.

Then I type string, and it shows only items related to this. Why? Because having a sorted list does not guarantee we are going to find things since most of them start with FC or other prefixes.

Moved to Open disussion.

If you are talking about the AddonManager, please say so.

I think that's a good idea. Do you think a simple filter box at the top is adequate?

Yeah, totally.

I also think that we don't need 2 or 3 tabs. And also, a single view with workbenches and macros is enough for me. A column with "workbench" or "macro" would be good to differentiate each one. And if it is important to filter out each one then a checkbox to display only macros or workbenches on top would be enough too.

Also, checkboxes one each line could allow installing/upgrade and remove a bunch of things at once. This would be a really nice feature too.

Also, a column that shows the item is already installed showing its version would be pretty informative.

Also, having descriptions and info cached would be nice.
Also, being able to reload information of each on a thread (without any visible impact for the user would be awesome too)

I am just putting in ideas that would improve the addon manager, any sub-set of these ideas would be a really good addition here.

I'm not Freecad expert. I use it for hobby-drawing but mostly my friends from company where I work asking me to setup Freecad - like Inventor / Solidworks. Usually I setup Modern UX (picture), setup 4 rows and text in UX, remove some useless workbench for mechanical, add Inventor WB...

For me it will be perfect "Addon manager" like in instillation Inventor - you chose different package. It's good idea. But old UX is difficult for new comers from Inventor/Creo/SW. It will be nice if Modern UX will be included.

In my company we export model to STEP and open in Freecad because we have less licenses of Inventor (for dimension checking) - it will be nice if sell department have it for showing models clients.

Maybe we can also include sheet-metal in Freecad?
It will be nice when you take Mechanical FEM package - it will hide mesh/ render and add Sheet metal. (it will hide some usless WB from ribbon)
