Re: Need some thoughts on modeling approach
Thanks for the help and @Shalmeneser for sharing some files that I can look at the tree view in order to get a history of sorts

Additionally, if the model is symmetrical I would model only half of it and then do a mirror

Could you explain this a little bit more in detail please?

Re: Need some thoughts on modeling approach
Is mirroring always advised even with very simple models like this? To me there is a tradeoff between having more objects in the tree and more elements in a sketch. Shalm's approach seems optimal to me in this particular case. One pad, one pocket, done.
I offer this alternative only to show how we can use Part::Face tool in Part Design for cases where Pocket's internal facemaker cannot cope with nested wires. Part::Face tool uses by default Part::FaceMakerBullseye as its facemaker where the Part Design tools generally use Part::FaceMakerCheese, which cannot manage nested internal wires. But if we make the face for the Part Design tool it will use that face readily enough.
Usage: select the sketch and use the Part::Face (face from wires) tool to make the face. Select the Body, edit the Group property to include the Face object. Select the Face, then use it to do the Pocket.
I include a techdraw page to show how the dd properties are used in the model and because I need practice with techdraw.

The top sketch doesn't need a mirror because the complete figure is easier than half of it.
The front sketch can be mirrored.
