apparently the free 3d builder can export 3 formats that freecad can import, so it shouldn't be a problem

Yes, that's right, it is mainly intended for the case that someone created the file themselves, or has the person who created it give them a different format.

Re: .3mf file type

Edit: From onekk suggestions I added the .3mf as a .zip to circumvent the forum limitations

Let me know if this is incorrect to add on to this thread.

I am not able to export the part as a .3mf. It appears to generate a blank(?) file. I have the attached FC file. I'm not able to upload the .3mf file since it is not one of the supported files for the forum.

Steps I am doing:
1. Select body
2. Meshes -> Create mesh from shape
3. Standard (10um, 3 deg)
4. Right click generated mesh -> export mesh
5. Select .3mf from dropdown

Code: Select all

OS: Windows 10 (10.0)
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.20.28929 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: master
Hash: 9251480ddb
Python 3.8.13, Qt 5.12.9, Coin 4.0.0, OCC 7.5.3
Locale: English/United States (en_US)

Suboptimal solution could be to rename it with a supported extension and let other users know that the file has to be renamed, or to zip the file.

Usually they work and permit to exchange unsuported extensions.

I've attempted to test this on the last couple of weekly builds, but the resulting 3MF file is not able to be read by PrusaSlicer or Fusion 360 (the only two programs I tried).

Code: Select all

OS: macOS 10.16
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.20.29126 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: master
Hash: 6c1c63cffebe6a9d55bd9b1d8ca6b741a4d16548
Python 3.10.4, Qt 5.12.9, Coin 4.0.0, Vtk 9.1.0, OCC 7.5.3
Locale: C/Default (C)
I've attached my simple FreeCAD PartDesign model, as well as the 3MF output (which I had to Zip, as the forum software won't let me choose the 3MF file type to upload).

Thanks!

John

As reference I have used Blender and that imported the file that was created with FreeCAD without problems. Do you get any error messages?

Does PrusaSlicer or Fusion 360 support the export of the 3mf format? If yes you could export the object from FreeCAD in a mesh format that the two programs support (e.g. STL), import into PrusaSlicer or Fusion 360 and export as 3mf. This way the output files can be compared.

Would you mind trying the attached with Prusa Slicer and/or Fusion 360?

cheers

A trick I've used with great success recently is using a combination of FCStd and Blender with sverchok Read/Write nodes.

For example, Blender under linux has no free step addon. So read the step in FreeCAD, read the FCStd with sverchok nodes.

It works the other way when Blender can read the file type as well.
