Attach your profile to the first edge of the spine, map mode normal to edge.

What you want to do should indeed work, but it is known, that the geometric kernel often fails to do it. It needs extra effort to get the elliptical shape your circle would produce. First step would be to sweep with an elliptical profile, attached as TheMarkster has shown.
