Mumps looks like a general purpose solver. The solvers discussed here are providing interfaces for finite element problems. They have an additional abstraction layer, allowing to define finite element problems at a high level.

Mumps can be used to solve the underlaying mathematics and seems to be already in use for code aster.

hi,

OOFEM is LGPL finite element solver from Czech Technical University, it has many capabilities: true beam, shell (linear quad & triangle) and solid element. another advantages using OOFEM is in nonlinearity for brittle material (e.g concrete & soil) plasticity and fracture/damage.

OOFEM use Salome as pre-processor to create UNV files and Paraview to display VTK results, there's available a python converter from UNV to OOFEM input files.
