Files don't open after today's software update!

Post by sebimweb »

Dear FreeCAD developers and forum users,

I have spent quite time in recent weeks to get acquainted with FREECAD and try to find out in how far it can be used for 3D model building in my field of work - I am an environmental engineer and dealing with sewer networks.

So far, I have been very impressed and, to this point, I am very motived to continue exploring the software. Thank you very much, first of all, for all the efforts being put in this project.

However, today I have received the latest software updates before starting my session, and now I cannot open the most recent of my files and I cannot continue my work. This is very disappointing and, indeed, would be a serious mess if it happened in a real working environment / on a real project.

I have both 0.17 and 0.16 installed on my system and, while I prefer 0.17 due to some important features such as the readability of the snap buttons, occasionally switch between the versions when I run into stability problems.

In this case, the problem occurs with both versions. 0.17 freezes while opening the files. 0.16 shortly opens the files, but produces an error message ("property not found") and than closes again.

I am not really sure if it is due to the software update, but I certainly haven't experienced the problems before and so I assume that this is the case.

One of the files is added in case someone can afford to have a look at it.

I would be very delighted if it was possible to open my files again. What can I do?

Thank you very much in advance. I hope to get ahead in FreeCAD and maybe, one day, can yield some helpful input to this forum, too.

Best regards
Jonathan

Hi and welcome to the FreeCAD forums.

I am not able at this time to check your specific issue, but I thought I would write to point out that you can not expect to successfully open files in 0.16 that were created/edited in 0.17. The truth is more complex, but to put it simply, file compatibility is only possible on one direction, as 0.16 can not possibly understand what to do with the changes and new features introduced in 0.17.

0.17 will not be reliably ready for anything that is important for some time as it is introducing some major fundanental changes and is only at a reasonably early stage of development. By all means please test it, but do not rely on it as it may well occasionally total ruin your file....It's the bleeding edge development version.

I can open the file without problems. Can it be, that there were updates on libraries FreeCAD depends on?
My version is self compiled on Debian with an additional commit needed for VTK on my system.

For me this also works for the daily ubuntu version:
OS: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.17.10035 (Git)
Build type: None
Branch: master
Hash: 0598af8a081f762039fa43efaf90ece4ca0b5e6f
Python version: 2.7.12
Qt version: 4.8.7
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 6.8.0.oce-0.17

if both, 0.16 and 0.17 fails, ther eis a chance you messed up the configuration files somehow. MAybe try to go to ~/.FreeCAD and rename the two config files in there. On startup new default ones are created, and than maybe freecad stops crashing.

Dear everybody,

thanks a lot. I am impressed by by the large number of replies in such a short time and had not expected that.

Well, so it seems my files are alright, but somehow the software does not run properly, obviously some problem with the underlying operating system.

I apologize for bugging you with this question which seems not no be FreeCAD-related.

I don't know how to fix it, since I'm not really a Ubuntu expert, but I hope it will somehow be fixed automatically with the next system updates coming. (I just tried installing FreeCAD 0.16 on Linux Mint, which I also have installed, but it did not make a difference; Mint is Ubuntu-based, anyway).

Anyhow, thanks for your cooperation, this is great fun! I will stay on board!

Best regards

Oh, and by the way, I will keep my hands off 0.17 for the moment when working on serious files, although some features look VERY promising to me and seem not to exist in 0.16 (such as the "addition / subtraction volume" property of sites). Thanks for the note.

Hi sebimweb, and welcome. The file opened fine for me as well using the build below so I attached it to see if you can open it. The file size is a little bigger because I have "Save Thumbnail" enabled in my Preferences.
