Part Placement - changing values

Post by chris s »

I am having problems moving a part to a desired location. I have created a sketch, then a pad, then I want to change the location of the pad in, say the z direction. When I try to type in a new value it does not change the value in the highlighted window, but the part moves to a different view angle depending on what number I type. This seems really weird, and I dont know if I am doing something wrong or is it a bug?

Hello Chris.

Welcome to FreeCAD and the forum.

In Part Design, please apply placement ONLY TO THE FIRST SKETCH USED, NOT THE SHAPE.

In Part workbench you can apply placement to the shape.

OK so I now have the pad, selected, and I select part workbench, but still cannot change the z value.

Hi,
Are you sure you're changing the "Position" values, not the "Axis" values ?

Yes, position, not axis. I just checked to make sure.

Hello Chris s,
please ensure that keyboard focus dont change while inserting numbers into textbox.
If cursor stops blinking, focus is lost and futher keystrokes are taken for view shortcuts.

Numbers are view shortcuts:

If you click onto graphics screen while typing, keyboard focus gets lost (cursor stops blinking)

Hope it helps

Thank you, that explains what I didnt know about the numbers shortcuts. But I still cannot enter any values. Cursor does not blink, so I have no focus to start with. I have not clicked in object window; I just click on pad, then go directly to the placement x,y,z field, but there is no cursor.

How can I get the focus?

You have to select the Sketch and not the Pad, as r-frank said before  .
You can change the position of objects created in the Part Workbench. If they are created in Part Design Workbench you don't create new objects with each operation, but only new features of always the same object. Thus it can be moved only by moving the first sketch.
