FreeCAD master now 5,000 commits over 0.16
It seems that I am the first to notice it: the current commit count of the master branch (11,714) is now a whopping 5,000 commits over the current 0.16 release (0.16.6712 at this time).
Back in April 2016 when 0.16 was first released, the revision number was 6700.
I believe this commit differential is the highest in the history of FreeCAD.
Just looking at the past few releases:
Release (commit differential over previous release)
0.17.1xxxx (5000+)
0.16.6700 (2029)
0.15.4671 (971)
0.14.3700 (1870)
0.13.1830 (1830) --> first release after switching from svn to git, the revision number was reset
0.12.5284 (838)
0.11.4446
0.10.????
Here's to hoping that a 0.17 release can be done after this summer.

The SVN build numbers are misleading because when making a release branch and adding a fix much later you get a relative high number because it counts all the commits of the trunk (the main branch which is master in git).
So, when using the commit number when the branch was created you get a more realistic result.
This way we get:
0.6.432
0.7.1316 (+884)
0.8.2227 (+911)
0.9.2631 (+404)
0.10.3205 (+574)
0.11.4024 (+819)
0.12.5209 (+1185)

Thanks Werner!
This still shows that 0.17 is long overdue! You might as well jump skip a digit and release it as 0.18!

This might be indeed the case. Yorik once suggested to use odd numbers for a developer version and even numbers for releases. You might as well jump a digit and release it as 0.18!
Re: FreeCAD master now 5,000 commits over 0.16
It would not be a first, looking at your stats, 0.7 was skipped?
Re: FreeCAD master now 5,000 commits over 0.16
Dug up the last topic about it, there was no consensus about it... https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic. ... 14#p137358
But if a couple of "big shots" decide it is that, then everybody else may fall back in line.

Any stable release would make us skip jump for joy .

For a guy who pretends to have a limited grasp of English, you have a knack for word play.

I am always a bit shaky if it comes to serious things.
