There are two "halves": one with 7 rungs and one with 6. The side with 7 rungs can move around the 2nd rung from the top. That means that the small two wooden plates (the ones that have a trapezoidal shape) are glued to the side with 6 rungs, but not to the side with 7.
Hopefully this clarifies the situation a bit. I will try to take a picture of it when it's folded. At the moment it is covered with blankets and heavily used as a tent.

Those generic toys are great. I will wait for the image in the folded state because I still dont understand what's going on at the top, where both vertical stands seem to be on the same level.

I have attached a picture showing the detail of the mechanism when the triangle is folded. The two halves are parallel now. That way, it can be attached to a wall easily and and it consumes less space when not in use.

Aha, very clever! I had assumed that the (single) turning joint was at the top.
