Version of FreeCAD

Post by hardeeprai »

The latest version 0.17, gives an impression that software is in its initial development stage. But IMO, it is quite useful and do its work nicely.

What is the concept behind such numbers for releases?

When release 1.0 can be expected?

As such release 0.9 (released in Jan 2016) looks better than 0.17 released in April 2018, though I am aware that in software version system, 0.90 is not same as 0.9, but a common person can see 0.9 same as 0.90.

As such with no release of FreeCAD with major version 1 or more than 1 (like 1.0 or 1.4 or 2.1), it makes newcomers to think that it is not ready to do anything useful, and she/he don't feel confident / motivated to experiment with it.

It might be considered as marketing exercise ;-)

There might be different version for Core (say) FreeCAD and that of each individual workbench.

Yes this is known. We are not all that good at marketing. ;)

We have occasional discussions:

When 1.0? Some say when Assembly workbench will be upstreamed. Others don't need it and feel 1.0 happened already for them. For some there will never be 1.0 as if only FreeCAD could do something that it doesn't do. That would be 1.0. Some of us started to see years in it and that works for us. Maybe 1.20 will happen instead of 0.20. Who knows ... :)

Wikipedia wrote:Some systems use numerical versions less than 1 (such as 0.9), to suggest their approach toward a final "1.0" release. This is a common convention in open source software.

Up until last week, when I rewrote the Download page, it was showing a warning at the top:
FreeCAD is under heavy development and might not be ready for production use

After 14 years of development, Inkscape is still not at a 1.0 release. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inkscape

Let us have good branding and packaging from this angle.

Fine, I will shift to that thread, and have more discussion there.

@hardeeprai

IMHO we should switch to 1.0 as soon as possible. FreeCAD is no 0.x software. FreeCAD is a stable useable software which deserves it to have a version nomber above 1.0 but lot's of people are other opinons. ATM I just leave the 0. if I speak with newcomers. I just tell them version 17 or 18 :o

At least one good news. If we continue to develop we will have a 1.0 in 50 years

why not switch to 1.0 after 0.18 is done. or 1.0 instead of 0.20 , which at last is a Plan.

just an idea .. i personally don´t care.. as i am accustomed to work with 0.xxx Software...

Many of us think that 1.0 should be when we have a proper Assembly WB. For all the people coming from mechanical design, this is a must-have.
