How To build a jaw

Post by Vincent97 »

Hello,
It's my first time with a Freed Cad. I'm a dentistry student and I'd like to know how to design a jaw ( if possible a superior and inferior jaw). I'm doing this because I'd like to add to the jaw some "screws" (implants) into the jaw.
Thanks for your attention

...that task is rather something like hardcore-stuff.
You can do it e.g. with a sweep or some kind of solid modeling out of a data pool.
But it's not trivial.

Three days ago I had a Crown put in (upper molar). Dentist has some cool gizmos and make their own Temp's. He showed me the simulated jaw with impression and the new porcelain crown. The simulated jaw he used was simply a tool to hold the tooth and not representative of my full jaw.

Having said that, the info provided by 'hammax' is correct but, you may not need a fully representative jaw - perhaps something simple would suffice. Attached is a simple sweep feature with a dummy tooth... Purpose is to give you an idea of a less complicated approach that may meet your needs... at, least as a starting point before going too complex...

...there is a method to model a parametric jawbone in FreeCAD by sweeping
several crosssections made by Sketcher-BSplines along a 3D-curve also made of Sketcher-Bsplines.
There are even more complex BSpline sections possible, to get a natural model.
The Sweepcurve is made of the Intersection of a horizontel and a vertical projection of the jaw geometry.
Essential is the controlled positioning of the crossections by Placement-operation to avoid twists.
The usage of Lattice2WB delivers a reliable Sweeppath. (thanks to freecad-heini).

Don't know if this helps (or you consider it cheating :D ) but there seems to be an stl in the downloadable zip

Medical Imaging, STL, Point-Clouds from Scans? - re: How To build a jaw

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

The jaw and screws, is this a generic or specific case? Do you have or can you get scans?

There are often posts mentioning STL and even Points-Cloud stuff. I don't know whether it's doable or not, nor whether anyone in the community has the necessary the skillset and opportunity and motivation, but maybe there could be a route from scans to a model.

A little DuckDucking suggests that others are interested in Medical Visualisation using FLOSS tools.

Just a thought.

But whatever, please do keep us updated.
