Pocket through multiple bodies
Hello! I don't know if is a help request or a feature request here. Is it possible to have a single pocket function (cutting extrusion) making a hole through multiple bodies?
Re: Pocket through multiple bodies
Feature requests frequently emerge from help requests
No, it's not possibe. You have two possibilities:Is it possible to have a single pocket function (cutting extrusion) making a hole through multiple bodies?
- Instead of a pocket you make a pad and then in Part workbench a cut with all bodies.
- Or you make a Pad and use it for ShapeBinders for constructing pockets in every body.

Re: Pocket through multiple bodies
Thank you, I think at this moment this really is the best workaround. Do you think in the future will be possible to select multiple bodies directly in the pocket function, as happens in some other CAD?
Re: Pocket through multiple bodies
I think you want to drill several objects by one hole (see my screenshot)
it's possible yes and no
yes if you merge the three objects and subtract the hole (red), but the three objects are now merged
you can, however, pierce each object by the same hole, one after the other, by Boolean subtraction, so the three objects will remain independent

Re: Pocket through multiple bodies
I don't think this will happen in the near future, if ever. The idea of a body is to have it rather self contained with very limited and well controlled links to the outside. To allow pockets going through several bodies - and pads are probably going to follow - would immediately destroy this clear concept and might throw us back before the stage where we have been prior to the introduction of the body concept.
Nevertheless I see the use cases where it would be sensible.

Re: Pocket through multiple bodies
In the commercial CAD I use at work, this functionality is called an assembly feature. So you can in fact, within the assembly document, create a pocket and have it cut through selected parts (bodies). There are two options for this assembly feature: it can affect only the assembly document, meaning that if you edit or open the part documents separately, the pocket will not be shown; or you can apply the assembly feature down through the parts, in which case the pocket feature will be copied/added to each part document that is affected, along with its sketch.
This is a nice feature to have, but it will require realthunder's Link work as well as an assembly workbench, be it realthunder's or another one.
Re: Pocket through multiple bodies
It sounds like the possibility to assemble holes. Sounds funny, but why should the solids in an assembly be only added and not subtracted?

Re: Pocket through multiple bodies
One potential purpose is for adding machining operations on a part that is made of welded components. You want to keep your components unaffected because you'll need to produce blueprints showing them separate and in their prior state before welding and machining.

Come on man, 2MB animated GIFs are utterly unwatchable. We've been over this.
