how to create hull

Post by natiqah278 »

Hai,

I am final year student of Bachelor of Naval Architecture at University Technology Malaysia, my final year project need me to modelling a hull using a freeCAD. My type of vessel is patrol craft. I only have a lines plan from autoCAD for this project. I'm trying a method that sketch a line for hull using a part and part design workbench. but this method take me a lot of time. because need to do one by one body. that in case in here someone can tell and help me if there another method more fast to drawing a hull from 2D to 3D. sorry my broken english, not really good but hope can someone understand what i'm trying to say.

This example from autoCAD, but I'm using FreeCAD for this method.

Hello.

If you're new at Freecad... good luck. I've been forcing myself in Freecad 4hours a day for the last 2 months and it has been hell.

First off, You cannot have that approach of comparing Autocad to Freecad and expect to work the same way or the the same things. Forget about it.

My advice if you've never worked on Cad, is take the time to watch on youtube the first 10 beginners tutorials and try to replicate them. Then you'll feel a grasp of how it works and you can decide if you want or have the time to continue.

Since 'm also interesting in nautical stuff, I've taken a look at hulls
Take a look at:

Hi @natiqah278 and welcome.

In addition to what was said. If you want to replicate the workflow as seen on the video. You would use the Draft workbench.

P.S. If you would like to achieve more parametric design. You would use Sketcher workbench.

@natiqah278:
constructing a ship hull with FC is very time consuming.
You can reconstruct the hull from the imported hull drawings
by using 3d splines, surfaces and sketches and some more.
Using the part and partdesign workbench alone is not enough.
And you should use the latest FC.018 snapshot for the work.
There was a long discussion in the german forum about constructing hulls.
https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=22148

The ship-workbench is not an option, because it dont work at the moment.
Do you know freeShip? It is for constructing hulls and doing the hydrostatics.

… here is my interpretation of your Fuselage.
I used Sketcher BSplines, because they do, what hydro- and aerodynamics like most.
And I am playing with CurvesWB, especially with Gordon surface.

Designing the body inherits another philosophy than making a plan/drawing of it.

… concerning your PM:
A solution with CurvesWB and Gordon surface of the GorchFock hull quickly reworked.
That's a way you can do hull construction.
There are some other/new benefits in CurvesWB to use.
