I found 4 possible descriptions which should not mixed IMHO, but in this module they are ...
edge finite elements mesh
face finite elements mesh
solid finite elements mesh
wire finite elements mesh
shell finite elements mesh
solid/compsolid finite elements mesh
length finite elements mesh
area finite elements mesh
volume finite elements mesh
1D finite elements mesh
2D finite finiteelements mesh
3D finite elements mesh
there is as well finite line elements mesh
which one fits best. Might there be more?
EDIT: fix word order

Re: how to name different finite element meshes
My vote goes to:
1/2/3D Finite Element Mesh
In any event, I think the words Finite and Element need to stay together.

Re: how to name different finite element meshes
FWIW, I second @HarryvL: those seem to be the most univoque and unambigous descriptions.
Re: how to name different finite element meshes
fixed the word order
Re: how to name different finite element meshes
browsed the internet and I would write it with small letters, you used big ones harry.
Re: how to name different finite element meshes
Ah yes, no need for the capitals at the start of the words.
Re: how to name different finite element meshes
Having said all of that, it is not exactly clear what these descriptions are used for. A cable is a line element, but it can be embedded in a 1D, 2D or 3D finite element mesh. Similarly a plate or shell element can live in a 2D or 3D mesh, but a volume element can only live in a 3D finite element mesh. So what are we trying to name here?
Re: how to name different finite element meshes
You are totally right they can only be used on no mixed meshes. Check the source code modul https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/blob ... shtools.py There I mixed shell mesh with face mesh and volume mesh. At time of writing the code years age I did not care but nowadasys it is cumbersome any time I read the code.HarryvL wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2019 9:59 am Having said all of that, it is not exactly clear what these descriptions are used for.
