DO215 originated by Cesare Milani

Post by hds »

A quick 3D redo of Capt. Cesare Milanis DO215 plan from 1956. Some minor faults can be observed which are probably due to scanning the original plan. A finnboard skeleton has been build according to the original plan. Fun time with FC and a laser cadder ...

Please make a video as you draw and position the elements of the fuselage. This is a big question for me.

Same working procedure as with the VIIC. I do the drawing in a 2D CAD program and import the parts into FC. In the 2D CAD make sure that all parts have a good x=0;y=0 coordinate so that in FC you can do the positioning with absolute coordinates. Note that DXF parts are imported into the XY plane. Rotate as needed. See video for details.

First off - thanks for posting your projects and updates - I enjoy them very much (and am in awe).

I have a question about the video - it seems you've swapped the axis Y and Z and I was wondering if there was a specific reason for that? At first it made sense since you only had half a rib, but then when you add the wing attachment and the spine I got a bit confused (strain brain for mental rotation).

hm, not sure what you mean. The front and bottom of the bottomkeel is the x=0;y=0;z=0 position (as is x=0;y=0 in the 2D side view). So any part can be placed with absolute dimensions regarding to that point in the 2D drawing.
When drawing a fuselage frame you are looking from front to back, but still only got x and y dimensions since it is 2D.

In FC a DXF import is placed in the XY-plane regardless of "what you think you are viewing at" in 2D. So you have to rotate and/or extrude the 2D part into correct 3D-direction. Making a long text short (how i do it, you adapt your on rules, but once set stick to them):
2D Front View = XY-plane in FC
2D Side View = YZ-plane in FC
That's why you have to rotate the 2D-side-view parts 90° clock or counterclockwise into the YZ-plane.

Nothing magic, just simple transformation from 2D-area into 3D-cube.

Or did you mean something different ?

I meant exactly that, except that, in my book:
2D Front View = YZ-plane in FC
2D Side View = XZ-plane in FC
2D Top View = XY plane in FC

Thanks for clarifying

ahh, these front, back, under, down confusion. Frankly i'am too stupid to make my mind up "do i look down on top of the paper, or do i sit in front of the paper ..." . Sure recipe to drive me nuts.
Personally i prefer +X,+Y,+Z .... -Z viewing directions. But that's only me, who had been conditioned to do technical drawings with ink on parchment paper sitting in front of the desk and falling asleep on top of the drawing.

So you know where my stars and stripes are from .... basically a top-down operation ...

P.S: Reminds of this rocket (Ariadne?) desaster when the engineers where talking about numbers. Only that one party did it metric and the others imperial ...

Some more eye candy for FreeCAD. If you like you can improve the FreeCAD file and (hopefully) repost the improvments here.

Have fun, stay healthy ...

Heiko

P.S: Dont get carried away by the plan. There are some (minor) imperfections in the original plan by Mr. Milani.
