Steam Engine and Pump - Noob's first project (Work In Progress)

Post by Cpl_Detritus »

This is a steam engine driven water pump that I think was mainly intended as a student exercise.

There are several design inconsistencies and bad design decisions that would have made this an impractical engine even back in the steam era.

It should serve as a nice first project to learn different aspects of FreeCAD.

This was particularly difficult as a first part. Had to do more tutorial reading than actual drawing.

I still can't do drafts so this part has no casting draft. (It is not shown in the drawing anyway)

With the lack of casting draft and the big internal cavity this would have been a very awkward part in real life.

First impressions about FreeCAD so far:

[*] FreeCAD seems pretty advanced and exceeds my expectations.

[*] "Part" and "Part Design workbenches do not have clearly defined purpose and the user is forced to switch from one workbench to the other several timtes. This is very annoying. These workbenches need to be combined in a single bench.

[*] The Fillet feature fails on some tangent surfaces. Needs some work. One error is visible at the root of the rear bearing boss. I could not correct this after several tries. Other edges that normally would have been filleted could not be done at all

[*] Need to figure out how to change wall thickness and fillet radius from a variable.

Those lines that appear on extruded cylinders are very annoying. Any way to fix them?

Rather disappointing to see this bug just hanging there since 2016.

To any professional CAD user that just scrams "Something is Horribly Wrong With My Model" and such a user simply would not continue for fear of losing his work. That's one sick puppy for sure.

That's all for the moment. The rest will come as I find more time to work on it.

Such is the way with software development especially FOSS hence the idea of offering it as a bounty. Obviously, this hasn't detracted users from using FC. It may, as you say, detract professionals but hey as we say a lot around here: "It's done when it's done"

BTW, great work. thanks for sharing your progress.

Is there a working bounty system for FreeCAD?

issue #2526 is not a bug, and the tracker issue reflects this by categorizing it as feature request. If you don't want to see the seams you can switch the draw style to "Shaded".
