We have just published a video about our new module called betterCAM.
A new FreeCAD workbench was developed to pass geometry data from 2D/3D objects to the cam software NC-HOPS.
Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAdRX7ahsa0

Right now it is just in German.

Very cool! You should post it in Announcements & Features forum.

I couldn't find any prices on the website. Can you provide a link?

Comparison of 3d modeling software

Post by Mark Szlazak »

I found the following university report that evaluated 3 CAD software systems: FreeCAD, Solidworks and Kompas-3D.
Of course FreeCAD has advanced over the version used in this 2017 evaluation but reading the report could still prove useful. The Mechanical Engineering department used the report to pick the software they would use.

Seems to be a very well made test.

It is interesting because the student compared SolidWorks with Kompas-3D and FreeCAD.

Just two points that probably were not well covered in 2017...
1) He used Assembly 2 WB for assemblies .... Now there is Assembly 2 Plus WB which is more powerful
2) He used Drawing Dimensioning WB ... Now there is TechDraw (still in development)

He found only a real issue for FreeCAD:
At the moment one more drawback of FreeCAD was discovered. There is no possibility to do a section view of object. This is a critical point while making a drawing for a body of chain tightener, because this part has the hole which should be displayed in the drawingin a special way. So it is not possible to do the correct drawings in FreeCAD for the objects with complex shapes.
But I think this is covered by TechDraw in FC 0.,18, isn't it?

BTW the final comparison gives FC a nice score ...
Summing up the grades from the table the results are the following,
Solidworks has 27 points out of 31, FreeCAD has 19 and Kompas–3D has 21 points.
and the final comment on FC:
But at the same time, the workbench with drawing is developed poor lyat the moment, so it was not possible to do good drawings, assembly drawing feature is not available at the moment. This is a critical point of the program, that crosses out all the merits of this program and makes its use impossible for the students at Saimaa University of Applied Sciences at the moment.
I think one of the main devs should contact the University to update the status and offer collaboration or just point the students to the forum to get help...
I don't think we ever met the author at this forum...

Maybe we can ask the student that did the comparison to redo it with 0.18 ?
