A quick search gave me this http://texturelib.com/license/
The download works without login and the one texture i checked was 4096x4096 pretty good for a seamless texture i think.
Also here are opensource textures https://opengameart.org/textures/all but don't know anything about the resolution of the textures.

Do you mean what is supported by the workbench? I think everything coin3d supports should work. So maybe it boils down to everything opengl supports.
I think i used a tif file once.
Will try to figure this out and document it
