As an example of topo naming you can just recreate the referenced edge if it is not the last one. This will shift all subsequent indices and the new edge will be geometrically the same but will have another index and so the reference will not point to it anymore.

That's a very clever and promising strategy! I wish that more people would apply it - without neglecting that every improvement which makes it obsolete is very welcome.
