… I didn't look at the Solidworks tutorial,
but in FC there are also solutions e.g. in CurvesWB.
A 5 minutes work example.
A little more work and you get your distorted pipe.

I found gordon surface(took some attempts to make it work), results are interesting. But i do not know, if i should trust a external addon, wat if it will stop development soon.

… I bet that some CurvesWB tools soon will be part of the hardcore FC WBs.
There are very useful features for experienced users.
