Issue using a datum plane to create final shape

Post by greghicks »

Hi

When using this video reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geSQlBczsWY, I am unable to figure out how to get the sketch on the datum plane to play ice and give me the expected outcome.

FreeCAD Version
OS: Windows 7
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.18.4 (GitTag)
Build type: Release
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-18
Hash: 980bf9060e28555fecd9e3462f68ca74007b70f8
Python version: 3.6.6
Qt version: 5.6.2
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 7.3.0
Locale: English/Australia (en_AU)

System Installed Memory 32GB

When I try to create the final pocket, the main body disappears from the 3D view and the pocket fails. After that, the Body has a red exclamation mark Tip Shape is empty (but must be executed)

Any suggestions?

Regards

Greg

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I don't know this very video, but the author is known for his good tutorials. Can you add a timestamp to the video link or tell us where to look? It's 25 minutes long!

Hi Chris

Sorry I missed the time stamp - about 22:15, just after creating the sketch on the datum - attempting to pocket the secondary shape is failing.

He is very good at and its a really good example that I was interested in using

Is the problem that the Sketch is not on the plane, or what?

In order to attach the Sketch look into the Property editor; in the Map Mode property of the Sketch, open the Part Attachment dialog, and then choose the datum plane.

If the problem is that the solid completely disappears when using the pocket, that sounds like the sketch that you are using is badly formed. Make sure all traces are closed. Since you are using a rectangle to cut, if some trace is not closed, it will probably try to subtract a big rectangle, essentially pocketing your entire solid. I would test this with a simpler sketch, just a small rectangle inside a bigger rectangle, for example. Once you get it to work, then use a more complicated sketch.

hi All

I have put the file https://github.com/greghicks01/freeCadP ... art.FCStd1

I have checked Map Mode - it's mapped to the Objects XY plane per the video (and offset like the video)

Both Sketches are fully constrained (although I did notice some curves to lines tangents did not correctly link the endpoints until I forced point constraint first)

It's likely that I missed something when following the video.

Any pointers from the forum are greatly appreciated

You can attach a sketch to a plane after its creation but the usual method is to construct it on the plane right away. In the video it is on 12:25 where the DatumPlane is selected before creating the sketch.

Hi Everyone

I just tried a really simple dataplane and got it to work - yep - I missed something and it looks like the sketch is not attached to the plane (even though it appears to be drawn on the plane)

Will try the second sketch again later today

If it is not mapped or not mapped to the right plane you can
- select the plane
- select the sketch
