Help with PartDesign Body

Post by getSurreal » Mon Mar 30, 2020 5:54 pm

I'm struggling with the best way to extrude when the parts aren't a single solid. I found it much easier to do this type of design in v0.16 where I could put all the constraints into a single sketch. I find it difficult to get the precision when using mirror or array, but maybe there's an easier method.
Attached is a very basic example, but imagine the posts being more complex objects.

What I see in your model could b done very well in current FreeCAD's PartDesign, because starting with the plate and adding the posts would always be a single solid.
However if you have to start with the 3 posts, you would have to use Part->Extrude.

OK, I guess I misunderstood that the sketch could contain separate parts as long as they were attached to a common solid.

Just expand on what chrisb said.

Part > Extrude can create non-contiguous solids, with out substrate.

Part Design > Pad cannot.

With your sketch, I extruded in Part WB, then created a Part Design Body

Still the same issue - every feature under the body after that should result in single solid.

Is that planned to be deprecated for Part Extrude in the future?

Which one? For now PartDesign Body should be a single solid. Plans to support multiple solids under one body exist but are not implemented still. Part Extrude can create multiple solids under one part as long as there are no intersecting contours and no nested contours.

Yes.

If the plan is to continue with multiple bodies, then remaining in the Part WB realm is best.

I don't think so. Part & PartDesign WBs aren't competitors. They are different toolboxes for 2 different modeling ways. Both should stay available in the future. ;)
