I messed up my installation badly

Post by tonyaimer »

Guys I need some ideas here.

I am using linux Mint 18.3 with the cinnamon interface.
I am a new Linux user
I am FreeCAD beginner currently working through the book by Yorik.
A few days ago I did something horribly wrong and I can only tell you what I think happened.
I could no longer open FreeCAD by clicking on the desktop icon as previously.
I had no problem in opening other applications from their desktop icons.
When I tried to uninstall FreeCAD I could not find it which means I may somehow have removed it?
I downloaded FreeCAD again from the website into my downloads folder.
I then clicked on that file and FreeCAD was reinstalled in 'other' in my menu panel and an icon
created on my desktop.
I am glad to say that FreeCAD is working again and my models that I had previously created are all working.
FreeCAD will start correctly from the 'other' group under MENU or the desktop icon.

BUT

The icon on my desktop is not the FreeCAD icon
I don't know if I even have the FreeCAD icon on my machine at present as all attempts
to change the icon have failed.

The icon on the MENU screen under 'other' is also the incorrect one.
I cannot figure out how to move the FreeCAD icon from 'other' to 'graphics' where it would be expected to be.
Can anyone explain what may have happened to my Linux cinnamon installation?
or what I have done wrong?

Regards

Some one on the linux group came up with the following

for the record I did the following in my linux mint cinnamon

right click the mint logo ( In bottom LH corner not the screen logo )
cllcked on configure
menu tools
clicked "open menu editor" bar

selected other
select-cut from rhs option not my mouse
selected graphics - paste also using rhs option not my mouse

Voila FreeCAD is now in the graphics group

Now I will try the other suggestion to change the Icon

Many thanks
