Help with converting obj to step

Post by Quirk »

Hi there oh helpful ones,

I need to convert four files from obj to step for a design project.
Is there someone that can help me. I am willing to pay.

Presently the file is in obj format and the quy who is doing the design work for me says it imports as facets and can't work with it.
He requires a STEP or IGES format.

Anybody willing to help?

You will most likely have to start again and model the object in FreeCAD (or other CAD application) and then export to STEP.

As the "other guy" said, its facets. All mesh formats are a "lossy" format, this means you simply loose information when you go from a CAD format to a Mesh format, so it is impossible to go back to the fully described object when you convert it back to a real CAD format, because that data was permanently lost. Mesh formats like that can not understand curves, they can only approximate one, as they are just straight edges/faces etc.

To second jmaustpc: of course you can convert from obj to step, but the step file will contain the very same facets.

Hi Quirk, and welcome!

Can you get .step or .iges files from whoever originally created the 4 things?
If not, you can import a .obj mesh into FreeCAD and use it as a guide in order to recreate it.
How complicated are these 4 objects?

and are they something that you can post publicly? If so you could attach it to a post.

Thank you for all the responses and having patience with a newbie.

Ok here is the whole story.

I want a model to use for anatomy training workshops.

4 files of human anatomy
1. skull
2. upper extremities
3. lower extremities
4. thorax

For example: skull
Original file was in 3DMax: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vd7zx3iapj13v ... l.max?dl=0
It was then converted to OBJ:https://www.dropbox.com/s/n576dtvpszu84 ... l.obj?dl=0
The engineer that is doing the project for me needs it in STEP or IGES file format.

What are the possible options oh wise ones?

FreeCAD gave a message when opening the .obj mesh file stating: "The mesh data structure has some defects.". Trying to Export the file in .iges format gave the message: "Skull is not a shape, export will be ignored.". Trying to fix the mesh in the Mesh WB > Meshes > Analyze > Evaluate and Repair Mesh caused the mesh to degenerate.

1. I think your best chance for success is to download and install the 30-day trial 3DS Max version, use it to open each of the original files, and then output to .iges. You have to give Autodesk your credit card info and will be billed after 30 days if you don't cancel before the trial period ends:

2. Post your problem in their forum; maybe someone there can help.

3. Look into Blender (www.blender.org) to determine if it will suit your needs for repairing and Exporting the mesh as .step or .iges.

I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure that FreeCAD can't help here.

Just wondering if the engineer wanting step/iges format is planning on milling/cnc'ing the models.
Maybe it is time to consider a different approach and 3D printing the models
