Extend IMPORTANT forum rules

Postby chrisb » Fri Sep 14, 2018 6:21 am

Would it be sensibel to add to the IMPORTANT forum rules something like

"If a question refers to a tutorial, add a link. If it is a video, use a link that contains the position where to start."?

Sure. But this relies on the OP to read the forum rules... ;)

Can one (or more) of the native speakers weigh in? Are the commas correct?

I have updated point 4 in the forum rules, please add it to the language dependent entries. Clicking the small up arrow in the first line of the quote will lead you directly to the language dependent entry.

Commas in English are tricky, and their usage is not universally agreed.

In the cases above, the commas are correct.

My informal rule is that too many commas are almost always better than too few.

Should we have the forum rules as a wiki page as well? That would be good for translating and checking history - It's easy to miss some changes.

I would like to have only one place where to edit. If the IMPORTANT link can be redirected, it can very well be a wiki page.

I've though about it more than once. Having the forum rules on the wiki would really make it a lot easier to edit, at least for me (the English and French topics are locked and as I'm no longer an admin nor a moderator, I have to ask a mod to unlock them to make changes, this is a hassle I find more and more difficult to live with).

It would also be much, much easier to keep the translations in sync with the original English one. Not only that, the translations would all be accessible from the English page.

What stopped me was that newcomers may get confused, because clicking on such a link would send them away from the forum. We would need to add some text like "to get back to the forum, click on the Back button of your browser".

On thing to remember, if we decide to do this, we should not delete the existing "IMPORTANT" topic, but simply strip it from its content and add a link to the wiki page; otherwise, the gazillion links we've pasted on the forum over the years would go dead.
