How do I unlink items in the tree?

A quick way to get rid of the nested children: drop them on the top node (the document).

Aha, it appears you are right on both points... Funny, I didn't notice that rule changed... Anyway, I find it better that way, let's leave it so for now.

About the second issue, of course.. I implemented that "active object" system (same as PartDesign) and therefore the old system doesn't work anymore. But since now the Group property is editable directly in the properties view, I'm not sure if it's very interesting to bring back the old system

That's what i've always been using, never knew of the other alternatives. But if you have alot of objects open in the tree, this can take a while to get to the top.

Sometimes for these complex actions it is helpful to put your file so that for us who are too brain tired to read and make sense can observe and manipulate your file to make sense of. :D :D
