Mid 2010 reboots at specific operation

Postby BrookeH » Wed Dec 04, 2019 12:19 am

Hi,

I am using a mid 2010 macbook pro, running FreeCAD 0.18 on MacOS 10.13 ( High Sierra).

The machine reboots as I move the mouse while drawing a 2 point rectangle in sketcher.

I select create new
Switch to part design
Create a new body
Select sketcher
Select xy_plane, ok
Select create rectangle
Try to draw ..... reboot!

I have tried launching from the terminal.
I have tried setting the IV_SEPARATOR_MAX_CAHCES=0

I got the same behavior using macOS 10.12 (Sierra)

I ran diskutility first aid and reinstalled the OS.
No change in app behavior.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I can hardly believe that FreeCAD can be able to reboot your Mac, there may be something wrong with the system. Can you reproduce this with 0.19 as well?

Thanks for the quick response. I, too, suspect a system problem.

I looked for 0.19, but did not find a download page for it. How does one find it?

Sadly, 0.19_pre does the same thing, except I was able to complete drawing the rectangle!

Was the installation of 0.18 where it occurred first on a plain vanilla system or did you have another FreeCAD version installed before? If the latter you can try to reset the configuration with the button in the preferences. Another possibility is to delete your config files or to move them in case you want to restore them.

Another possibility to find the problem is to start FreeCAD with the additional commandline parameter -l (small letter L), which creates a logfile in the directory mentioned above.

chrisb,

Thanks!

The installation is vanilla. I first installed it in late November and reinstalled over it.

I ran it with the log option, after renaming user.cfg and system.cfg. the bottom of the log file is shown below.

I have my $HOME directory on a separate drive, using a soft link to redirect. The log file and cfg files were on the second drive. I did find stub cfg files in the rump user $HOME directory still on the primary hard drive. These files have a length of zero bytes. The other cfg files have sizes : system.cfg is 922 bytes and user.cfg is 22kb.

Note that no new cfg files were created in this directory after the old ones were renamed to user.cfg.old and system.cfg.old.

Bottom of log file:

I'm sorry, but I cannot see anything unusual.

Someone else has to jump in.

All,

Thank you for your help.

I seem to have remedied the problem. I had a folder with several thousand photos on the desktop. This machine only has 8 Gb of RAM.

After I cleaned up the desktop, I was able to create a simple rectangular solid by padding a sketch.

To be certain, I have repeated this and continued to modify the parts created.

I apologize for taking your valuable time, but your advice and guidance helped me by assuring me that it was probably not the app.

Thanks for reporting back. Even if FreeCAD is not to be blamed it would be interesting what exactly the cause was, or better how to avoid it, so I can add it to the known OS specific issues.
